Cooper Flagg and the Mavericks
Nico Harrison shocked the NBA world in early February when he traded Luka Dončić to the Lakers for Anthony Davis and one 1st-round pick. In a market that netted the Brooklyn Nets 5+ 1st-rounders for Mikal Bridges, this was a horrendous deal. They should and could have gotten so much more for one of the NBA’s very best players at just 26 years old. Dallas fans reacted by canceling their season tickets and bailing on the Mavs, though they may now return for Flagg.
Anthony Davis was the main haul in the trade, with Nico boasting the importance of having a stellar defense. While defense may win championships, there are many concerns about the durability of the oft-injured Davis as he approaches 33 years old. He will be tasked with staying on the floor and creating space for Flagg, as well as aiding in the effort to cover up any initial defensive shortcomings the rookie may have. His health is crucial to Dallas’ future outlook.
Cooper Flagg will be the third consecutive superstar to play in Dallas. After being selected 9th overall in 1998, Dirk Nowitzki led the way for the Mavs for two decades before ing the torch to Luka Dončić. Fans in Dallas expected a similarly long career for Luka, which created a ton of shock when he was traded. Yet, now the Mavericks prepare to welcome a new star, this year’s projected 1st-overall pick Cooper Flagg. Even as a rookie he may help them reach the playoffs.
