Fight Preview
Manny Pacquiao is regarded as one of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport, and he already holds the record as the oldest welterweight world champion following his win over Keith Thurman six years ago. However, he will be looking to break his own record when he clashes with Mario Barrios.
The Pac-Man has held world titles in four different decades, and he is a lineal champion across four weight classifications. However, there was a sense that we had seen the last of the Filipino when he was beaten by Yordenis Ugas in August 2021.
Rumors of a comeback heated up last week, as he was reinstated at number five in the rankings by the WBC. His decision to the ring looked to have become clearer a few weeks ago after he fell short in his bid to be elected to the Philippines’ senate.
However, this will be no easy challenge against a rival that is over ten years younger. Not only that, but Mario Barrios has achieved success at the highest level already throughout his career, which included holding the WBA super lightweight title between 2019 and 2021.
However, both of his career defeats have come against names at the highest level of the sport. He lost via TKO against Gervonta Davis in 2021, before being outscored by Keith Thurman in 2022. He was last in action after competing in a controversial split decision draw against Abel Ramos in November.
Mario Barrios vs. Manny Pacquiao Pick
All eyes will be on Pacquiao as he makes his return to the ring after a four-year break in Las Vegas. However, Barrios could be a difficult opponent for the legendary boxer. Barrios boasts the reach and height advantage, and he has been more regular in the ring.
