Race Preview

The middle leg in the Fillies’ Triple Crown will kick off a stellar weekend of horse racing action on both sides of the globe. The Epsom Oaks has a prestigious history, with the first edition of the race dating back to 1779.

Unbeaten Desert Flower heads the betting for trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick. Minding and Love both followed up success in the 1000 Guineas with success in the middle leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown, but they are the only two winners to achieve that feat since 2003.

Plenty of experience could also go against her on Friday, with only three winners prior to Love in 2020 having lined up on more than three occasions before the Oaks. But, her 1000 Guineas success does illustrate that the Godolphin filly has the best form in the book.

Aidan O’Brien’s stars have dominated the preps, with each of Minnie Hauk, Whirl, and Giselle scoring wins in notable trials. The fact that Ryan Moore has opted for the former is well worth its weight in gold.

Minnie Hauk looked every inch a staying type over this Epsom test after winning the Cheshire Oaks, but only three previous winners of that race have followed up in the Oaks in 30 years. She could become the first since the legendary Enable to achieve the feat.

Of the remainder, Group One-winning trainer Ralph Beckett could have an interesting contender in the form of Revoir. The three-year-old was only beaten a short head at Newbury on her return in May by Qilin Queen, and this extra distance and the fact that she has a run under her belt make her very appealing.

Epsom Oaks Picks

Despite a small field, this is a fascinating renewal of the Epsom Oaks. On breeding alone, Giselle should be a leading chance even without Moore aboard. She is a daughter of Frankel and has direct links to Irish Derby winners and an Oaks runner-up.

She couldn’t have been more impressive when landing the Oaks Trial at Lingfield last month, easing nine lengths clear of the field and galloping through the line.

This extra stamina test should play to her strengths, and she could be a value play worth siding with.
