And Boston is Back Below .500
Despite Red Sox fans and media relentlessly criticizing owner John Henry for his frugality and seeming indifference to pursuing championships as he did in the past, the owner sort of has a point given the heavy spending this offseason and that the team is one game behind where they were a year ago, a season in which they finished at 81-81, well out of contention.
After losing two straight to the woeful Orioles, the Red Sox are now 26-27, grappling for mediocrity in the AL East.
To break their latest skid, they send ace Garrett Crochet to the hill in Milwaukee.
Crochet has pitched at least 5 innings in every start this season. He has a 1.98 ERA, has allowed 51 hits in 68.1 innings, and has given up 15 earned runs. He’s struck out 78 and walked 22.
No Brewers player has homered against Crochet. Jake Bauers is 1 for 2, Daz Cameron is 1 for 4, William Contreras is 1 for 3, Eric Haase is 1 for 4, Rhys Hoskins is 1 for 3, Bryce Turang is 1 for 2, Christian Yelich is 1 for 3, and Joey Ortiz is 1 for 3. The only batter with anything other than a single is Ortiz, who hit a double.
The Red Sox offense has generally been productive. Wilyer Abreu has an .848 OPS and 12 homers. Rafael Devers, despite the drama surrounding his disputes with the front office, is not letting that impact his at-bats. He’s hitting .291 with a .406 on-base percentage, a .945 OPS, with 12 homers. Alex Bregman has 11 homers and a .938 OPS.
Trevor Story got off to a great start, but his average is down to .220. Kristian Campbell is in the same boat, and his OPS is down to .673.
Brewers Send Solid Rookie Chad Patrick to Face BoSox
The Brewers are hanging around contention in the NL Central, one year after they somewhat surprisingly dominated the division before losing in the Wild Card Series. They have won 5 of 7 to get close to .500.
Against the Red Sox, rookie Chad Patrick takes the start.
Patrick has a 3.23 ERA, has thrown 53 innings, and has given up 51 hits. In general, the Brewers limit him to 5 or so innings. He’s only given up 4 homers, walked 16, and struck out 45.
As a rookie, he’s never faced the Red Sox.
Christian Yelich is batting .205, has a .658 OPS, and 9 home runs. Jackson Chourio has a .685 OPS. Rhys Hoskins is having another solid year with an .862 OPS and 7 homers. Ortiz is batting .185 with 2 homers.
Red Sox vs Brewers Pick: Crochet Has Been Dominant and That Will Continue
As shaky as the Red Sox have been and as justified as their fans’ frustration is, one move has worked out perfectly: acquiring Garrett Crochet. Patrick has given the Brewers more than they could reasonably have expected from him, but Boston will score enough to Crochet and take the victory.
