Jannik Sinner vs. Novak Djokovic Preview
Sinner’s Route to the Final
World number one Jannik Sinner will be aiming to win a third straight Grand Slam title this weekend following victories at the US Open and the Australian Open. The Italian is yet to reach a French Open final, but he did enjoy a career-best effort last year when reaching the final four.
Sinner has looked remarkable throughout the Grand Slam at Roland Garros. The 23-year-old is yet to drop a set, and has breezed through talented rivals in the forms of Andrey Rublev and Alexander Bublik in the previous two rounds.
Against Bublik, Sinner won 77% of the points on his first serve, and an eye-catching 71% of the points on his second serve. In total, he hit a staggering 101 winners, which was almost double the tally of his quarterfinal opponent.
Djokovic’s Route to the Final
It is rare to see Djokovic available at such big odds for a Grand Slam semi-final, but the Serbian could be vulnerable against a younger rival playing at the top of his game. Despite that, the Serbian is chasing a fourth French Open success, but a first Slam victory since the 2023 US Open.
As is typically the case, Djokovic has been dominant in the previous rounds at Roland Garros, failing to drop a set in his first four matches. However, he was forced to raise his game in the previous round when coming up against talented German Alexander Zverev.
After dropping the first set, Djokovic responded like a champion, winning each of the following three sets and dropping just nine games. Among the standout points was a stunning 41-shot rally, which ended with Djokovic keeping his serve.
Head-to-Head Record
Total | Jannik Sinner | Novak Djokovic | |
---|---|---|---|
Total | 9 | 4 | 5 |
Clay Court Wins | 1 | 0 | 1 |
Grass Court Wins | 2 | 0 | 2 |
Hard Court Wins | 6 | 4 | 2 |
Djokovic holds the overall advantage against Sinner, but the recent clashes do appear to highlight that the fortune is changing. The Italian has won each of the last three head-to-head encounters between the superstars, which included a straight sets success at the ATP Shanghai event in October 2024.
Jannik Sinner vs. Novak Djokovic Picks
The fact that Djokovic hasn’t won a Grand Slam title since 2023 is important, as the Serbian’s powers could be beginning to fade at the highest level.
Sinner has been playing at the top of his game throughout the tournament at Roland Garros, and he could put on a dominant showing against his legendary opponent to set up a match for the ages against either Alcaraz or Musetti.
